Visual Code		In majority of the video, black and dark colours are predominantly used and the black is used to produce negativity because it is seen as a dark and negative colour. Eminem also uses a lot of hand movements which are put across towards the camera. This has connotations of rap videos which also gives away the genre of the song without you having to listen to the lyrics.
Genre		The Genre of the artist is usually identified by what the artist is wearing and what the song is about/sounds like. From this I feel that Eminem is under the genre of Rap and RnB. Also within the video there is direct contact with the singer (Eminem) which is stereotypical of rap as it shows the artist having a conversation with the camera.
Audience		From the types of clothing that Eminem is wearing in the video and the shoes I would suggest that the audience for this music video would be for people aged 14 – 25, this could also be backed up with lyrics Eminem uses as the audience might be able to relate to the lyrics within the song.
Organisations		Throughout the video there are several close ups of Eminem’s shoes which are Nike trainers. This could link to marketing as the video could be used to promote the brand and the specific shoes as well as promoting Eminem. Also, at the very end of the video the music company that produced the video get some recognition for the creation of the video.
Narrative		During the video of Not Afraid Eminem is shown to be trapped in a circle of mirrors this could show that at some point in the artists life he was trapped somewhere and found himself stuck. Also the way that he is looks at himself in the mirror could suggest that he couldn’t even recognise himself. In the video following Propp’s character theory Eminem is seen to be both the hero and the villain in this video. This is shown in this screenshot where the hero is looking back on the villain. The use of the theory helps to create a clear narrative and help the story within the video flow.
Technical Codes		The establishing shot used shows the artist, Eminem looking over America which is where he is from. The visuals used here could interpret that he is now superior and that he is able to look over the whole of a city. This has connotations of power as it is making the artist look powerful. Having this shot is very significant and shows that he has overcome a lot, this is also backed up with the lyrics used. Also, this shot is show at the very beginning and at the very end to show that he started on a high, fell into a bad situation and then finished on a high again.

 

By doing this I am able to see how a music video is constructed and am able to look into what artists have done for their music videos and gather ideas.
